the days, weeks, and years past. We remember our

whom are no longer with us. In this issue you

| Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving occurs this year on Thursday,
November 22. Thanksgiving is an American
holiday set aside to give thanks. When I
think of Thanksgiving, I am flooded with memories. I
reflect on the days, weeks, and years
past. I think of family members, friends and
acquaintances who are no longer with us. I
remember the details, the care of setting the table
with our best dishes. Not a small feat given our
mix of jelly glasses and multiple dish patterns. I
remember my grandmother's chocolate cake,
my mom's love of preparing the meal and
mother-in-law's yeast rolls. I also remember Aunt
Vera's Sage dressing, cousin Dan's deep fried turkey
and swapping recipes with my best friend.
Nearly every American family has their
traditions, or special observations that are tied to
this holiday. For some of us, it is watching the
Thanksgiving Day parade, a game of touch football, or
reviewing the glossy advertisements in the newspaper
as we plan for tomorrow's holiday sales on the
must-have gift items. And for some of us, the
Holidays require us to travel using trains,
planes or automobiles to be with our families.
Whatever this holiday may mean to you, the name of
this holiday is large. A day to give thanks. Thanks
for our opportunity, for our health, our children, our
parents, or significant others. An appreciation to be
alive at this moment in time.
Being thankful is a very personal experience and
it is very possible for two people to witness or be
part of the same experience and one person express
tremendous appreciation and the other not experience
gratitude at all. The challenges of our lives and
experiences do have an impact on the way we view the
world. Researchers have found that individuals who
express gratitude tend to be more optimistic, are
happier and suffer less depression. So how can
you cultivate gratitude or gratefulness if you
genuinely do not feel it? We have a saying in public
health, "what get's measured, get's done". In other
words, keeping track of all the good things that
happen to you and mindfully express appreciation will
help you cultivate gratitude. Be thankful for the
little things, food, clothing, shelter, job, health
and our friends and family. If you feel that there are
no good things in your life, try to
express appreciation on behalf of others.
Remember, grateful people are happy people! So be
thankful and live your happiest
life! |

American Smoke Out
Are you a smoker? Would you like
to stop? On the third Thursday in November the Great
American Smokeout occurs. A national day sponsored by
the American Cancer Society in the United States
encouraging persons who wish to stop smoking.
More Americans make an attempt to stop smoking on
this day than any other. To stop
smoking is a personal choice. However, the benefits of
quitting are felt in families, workplaces and
communities.
How can you stop smoking?
1. Decide this is something you will do.
2. Select a method. Will you choose to stop by
quitting cold turkey, will you choose to contact a
physician, will you request a medication, such
as a pill, use a inhaler, or patch?
3. Avoid triggers such as being around other
smokers.
4. Throw away lighters, cigarettes or any other
smoking accessories.
5. Substitute a healthy habit. Run, walk, play
tennis, etc.
